BEING HIGHLY FAVOURED

Today we are reminded of our primal status with God. We were “holy and spotless” and were meant “to live through love in his presence.” (Ephesians 1:4). All these we lost through the fall of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:1-7, 9-15,20).

It was this situation that God wanted to remedy through the incarnation (Genesis 3:15, Luke 1:26-38). In the example of the Virgin Mary in our Gospel passage today we are presented with an example of how we are to respond to God in our lives. Mary was determined on doing God’s will. We too must strive always to crosscheck our motivations and actions to see whether they conform to God’s will in the given situation. A simple rule of thumb in this regard is to note that God’s will is always noble and intended for good. Hence whatever is good and noble in any given situation should be pursued irrespective of how it affects us personally (Luke 1:34).

We may need to also remind ourselves that the serpent, Adam and Eve were all held individually accountable for their actions (Genesis 3:9-15). We too are held responsible for our actions, and will surely be called to account for them at the Lord’s coming to us at death.

May we use this holy season of Advent to work on being less like Eve, but more like the Virgin Mary in our response to God so that like her, we may also “be highly favoured!” (Luke 1:28). Amen!
