For many, the Antichrist refers to a particular person in the future. In the recent past, some specific world leaders were even named as the Antichrist in fulfilment of some perceived prediction or prophesy. But the beloved Apostle John leads us to a deeper and better understanding so as to get our focus right (1 John 2:18-28). According to the Apostle, “The man (woman) who denies that Jesus is the Christ – he (she) is the liar, he (she) is the Antichrist” (1 John 2:22, cf. Psalm 97(98):1-4; John 1:19-28).
Hence, you can be the Antichrist! I can be the Antichrist! For when we refuse to “Keep alive in (y)ourselves what you (we) were taught in the beginning” (1 John 2:24-25), when we allow ourselves to be lead astray and away from the injunctions and teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ we are opposed to Jesus, we are Antichrist (1 John 2:26).
Have I, have you become one of the Antichrists? Let us begin anew (1 John 2:18-19).
