REJOICE

With just about a week before Christmas we should be joyful that we will not have to wait for too long before the celebrations begins. Our reflection passages for today reminds us that God’s direct intervention in the human experience through the birth and ministry of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ calls for great rejoicing. Isaiah the prophet informs us that we are to be joyful because the coming of the promised Messiah is for our liberation from our bandages (Isaiah 61:1). Chief among which is obviously our slavery to sin and death, and for which we should be glorifying the Lord (Luke 1:46-50,53-54). Hence, the Apostle Paul invites us to be happy at all times even as God himself desires that for us (1 Thessalonians 5:16-24).

However, in view of the second coming of our Lord Jesus, the Apostle also advises us to strive to live virtuous lives (I Thessalonians 5:22-23). In John the Baptist we see what it means to be virtuous (John 1:6-8,19-27). It is a life that bears witness to life, to the truth, to goodness and to the light, in a world shrouded in sin and darkness (John 1:1-9).

Like John the Baptist, we too must strive to bear witness to Jesus Christ, by imbibing and reflecting Jesus’ light in our own lives. And also radiating same in our respective places of influence and illumining whatever darkness that may be present in the lives of those around us. Then, shall we have even more reasons to rejoice.

Reflection Passages For Today: Isaiah 61:1-2,10-11;61:1; Luke 1:46-50,53-54; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24; John 1:6-8,19-28
