As we embark on this holy season of Advent, we are presented with the imagery of God’s mountain. Two days ago, we were informed that “all the nations will stream to it, peoples without number will come to it; …to the Temple of the God of Jacob that he may teach us his ways so that we may walk in his paths” (Isaiah 2:2-3).
Today, our scriptural passages assures us of the fulfilment of all our deepest desires on God’s mountain. In the prophesy of Isaiah we read: “On this mountain, the Lord of hosts will prepare for all peoples a banquet of rich food, a banquet of fine wines, of food rich and juicy, of fine strained wines. On this mountain…he will destroy Death for ever. The Lord will wipe away the tears from every cheek” (Isaiah 25:6-8). And in our Psalm and Gospel passage today, Jesus as this mountain, begins the fulfilment of the prophesy of Isaiah (Psalm 23, Matthew 15:29-37) which he will later bring to completion on Mount Calvary in his victory over sin and death (Isaiah 25:8).
My dear friend, this holy season of Advent invites us to climb the mountain of the Lord, to journey with Jesus, to come to Jesus, and to be with him. We are invited to listen and learn from Jesus (Isaiah 2:3), and to deeply immerse ourselves in this experience, so as to reap the bountiful benefits (Isaiah 25:6-10).
