CLEANSING GOD’S TEMPLE

Jesus, in our Gospel passage today (Luke 19: 45-48), drove out those who were selling in the temple for profaning it, because the temple is sacred (Eph. 2:21). But God’s temple is not just mere buildings, but more importantly ourselves (1 Cor. 3:16, Eph. 2:21-22). But have we in anyway desecrated God’s temple, his dwelling place?

We often invest so much resources in the building and maintenance of places of worship (Temples/Churches). But do we expend similar, or even greater resources in the building up and maintenance of that temple which we are? Note that none of the structures, no matter how beautiful and/or magnificent endues eternally. However, that temple which we are, and which eternally endues (or perishes) is often not adequately attended to with similar, or even greater gusto.

Jesus forcibly cleansed the Temple in Jerusalem. We too may need to do same to that temple which we are. Firstly, by genuine repentance; secondly, by reverencing the other person as also God’s dwelling place, irrespective of creed, race or social standing; and thirdly, by courageously distancing ourselves from all unchristlike principles, ideologies and practices. For, “If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy.” (1 Cor. 3:17).
