[1.] Wisdom 9:13-18 [2.] Psalm 90:3-17 (Response to the Previous)
[3.] Philemon 9-17 [4.] Psalm 119:135 (Summary of Gospel of the Day)
[5.] Luke 14:25-33 (Gospel of the Day)
OFTEN, ONE CAN NOT BUT FEEL THAT CHRISTIANS TODAY ARE INVOLVED IN A BIZARRE POPULARITY CONTEST. It is quite disheartening what so many modern day preachers and disciples of the Word have become. Many of us are simply playing to the gallery like some politicians, in a bid to win despicable popularity for pecuniary benefits with empty promises and the like (cf. Mar.10:35-45, Mat.20:20-28). But not so with Jesus. And it is his examples we must follow, if we are to be worthy of the name, Christian. Our Gospel today presents to us that, “Great crowds followed Jesus” (cf. Luk.14:25). Jesus’s popularity has obviously increased, but being well aware that the salvation of souls far outweighs ephemeral delights in winning cheap popularity contests at the expense of God’s Word, did not hesitate to declare to his audience what all needed to comprehend (cf. Luk.14:26-33, Joh.6:43-61-67*). Paul expresses same sentiments as follows: “Woe to me if I do not preach the good news” (1Cor.9:16). “Woe”, because the good news is meant to bring about a tangible change in our relationship with God for the sake of our eternal salvation (cf. Joh.14:23).
Hence, like Jesus and Paul, we need to understand that absolutely nothing should be allowed to come between us and God (cf. Luk.14:26-33, 1Cor.9:16). Being finite, and weak of ourselves, we cannot. Thus, we have to let God’s wisdom, his spirit guide us by paying attention to his Word (cf. Wis.9:13-18, Psa.90:3-17, Psa.119:135, Phm.9-17).
