[1.] 1Corinthians 4:1-5     [2.] Psalm 37:1-40 (Response to the Previous)
[3.] John 8:12 (Summary of Gospel of the Day)     [4.] Luke 5:33-39 (Gospel of the Day)

EXAMEN PLEASE! DO NOT REVILE. The statement: “But for the grace of God, there goes I” often attributed to John Bradford (1510-1555) and Philip Neri (1515-1595), is an expression of humility, and sign of understanding that not aided by Grace, of ourselves we can do nothing worthwhile (cf. Joh.15:5, Eph.2:4-7,8-10).

That statement is borne from the realisation that the same evil principles which had made one odious at some point in time, are in our own heart also (cf. Rom.5:12-14, Rom.7:15-24), and that we do need God’s help not to do worse (cf. Rom.5:15-20, Rom.7:25). This is precisely what Paul is saying to us in our first bible passage of the day (cf. 1Cor.4:1-5).

Hence, let us then allow the Lord to give us new garments and new wine skins – to be renewed by his word, and his examples, so that we may be able to receive this new life he is offering us (cf. Joh.8:12, Luk.5:36-39).

And “You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us” – 2 Corinthians 9:11
